GERMANY 7 – 6 ITALY on penalties. Germany wins against Italy for the first time in a major tournament

How do I start?

How should I start?

With the trio of failed penalties, Mueller-Oezil-Schweinsteiger, I’ve been hashtagging #byeEURO on our Facebook group then I could not count the times I laughed hard and hoped that there’s cocktail (maybe a pitcher of it?) by my side.

It started with a great Mesut Oezil finish giving Germany a lead at 65′ but Jerome Boateng and his infamous “raise your hands up in the air” thing got things messy as Azurri was rewarded a penalty (like seriously? Why on earth would he do that? It was painfully absurd but funny at the same time). Leonardo Bonucci successfully converted this leveling with the opponent at 1-1 on 78′.

A few of the many memes now circulating online. #PutYourHandsUpInTheAir

Then the game reached Extra Time.

Then the game was forced to a penalty shootout.

Jonas Hector’s shot secured Die Mannschaft’s slot in the semi-finals and finally putting an end to the “no win in major tournaments” curse of the Germans against the Italians.

Scoring against the great Gigi? Oh yaaassss Jonas Hector oh yaaasss!
Too much awesomeness in one photo — today’s best, Manuel Neuer (DEU) and the legendary Gianluigi Buffon (ITA)

It was a good day after all. Italy, you have played well!

The statistics — tight match, eh?

And to Germany…off we go to the next stage!

PS. Let us hope that Mario Gomez and Sami Khedira return well and able when we meet either France or Iceland.
